The showrunners reflect on the now torturous cliffhanger.

NCIS: Hawai'i was cruising along before it came to a dead stop. CBS pulled the plug on the procedural spinoff without any warning, shocking both fans and the people who made it. We've already heard the stars of NCIS: Hawai'i voice their sadness over the sudden cancelation, but now the people behind the scenes have spoken up.

Jan Nash, Christopher Silber and Matt Bosack were the co-showrunners for NCIS: Hawai'i, and they recently opened up about the show's cancelation during an interview with TV Line. The trio admitted they were surprised by the news, and would have changed the ending of season 3 had they known ahead of time.

The showrunners promised more Tennant backstory

A Family Matter
“A Family Matter” – Following the cliffhanger Season 19 finale, with Parker (Gary Cole) still on the run with his ex-wife Vivian (Terri Polo), the team investigates who from his past might have a personal vendetta against him in hopes of clearing Parker’s name. Enlisting the help of NCIS: Hawai’i’s Special Agent Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and Computer Specialist Ernie Malick (Jason Antoon), who are in town meeting with Director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) in preparation for a global military /

"We were obviously surprised, the trio stated. "If we’d known it was coming, we probably wouldn’t have ended the series on a cliffhanger." Interestingly enough, Nash, Silber and Bosack posit that CBS was unsure of what to do with the show towards the end of its run. "The fact that the studio and the network didn’t stop us makes it seem like they might not have seen it coming either."

Nash, Silber and Bosack told the outlet that they already had ideas in mind for where season 4 was going to go, and how the NCIS: Hawai'i team was going to progress. Especially with regards to the character of Maggie Shaw, played by Julie White:

"While not fully fleshed out, we had a general idea of where the Maggie story was going. It would have eventually intersected with Jane Tennant’s mother"

There would have been more Lucy & Kate scenes as well

Fans would have also learned more about Tennant's past as a spy, and how her traumatic experiences inform the way the character runs the NCIS unit. Then, of course, we would've gotten more time for the romance between Lucy Tara (Yasmine Al-Bustami) and Kate Whistler (Tori Anderson).

"There would have been some movement," the trio of showrunners asserted. "Whether it would have been a wedding, meeting families, or some other thing, we didn’t know... We loved our repertoire of characters and we would have kept using them as much as we could."

It's sad knowing that we will never get to see these plot threads come to fruition, but fans will at least get a bit more NCIS: Hawai'i content when the series box set is released in October.
