Chicago PD fans lose their minds over Upstead divorce

Brettsey fans might be thriving, but the same can sadly not be said for Upstead fans. The Chicago PD season 11 premiere delivered a devastating blow to fans of Upton and Halstead when it was revealed that during the six months that had passed since the events of the season 10 premiere, things between Halstead and Upton went from bad to worse.

The rift between the two grew exponentially in the months during the time jump that occurred between seasons 10 and 11, with Upton moving out of their shared apartment and communication between the two breaking down further. Then came the bombshell fans had been dreading: Upton and Halstead are divorcing.

That's right, Upstead is no more and the divorce papers have not only been signed by both Upton and Halstead but have officially been mailed in meaning the pair's marriage is coming to a close. This was a plot twist that fans did not expect and were not at all happy about.

Chicago PD should not have had Upton and Halstead get divorced

Heading into the season premiere of Chicago PD season 11, word broke that Tracy Spiridakos would be leaving the show and fans immediately began speculating over how the show might write her character off the show.

One running theory among fans was that she would leave town to reconcile with her long-time partner turned husband Halstead, who left the show in season 10. As many fans pointed out, this would have lessened the blow of losing Upton just one year after Halstead left by knowing that the couple would get their happy ending.

Instead, the show broke the pair up with the final nail in the coffin coming in the form of divorce papers which brought an end to the pair's marriage. It was a twist that did not sit well with fans and understandably so.

Fans waited so long to see Upton and Halstead finally act on their feelings. This was a pair they invested so much time in over the years and had been rooting for season after season. So to see their relationship torn down so quickly and in the way that it did was heartbreaking for fans and a disservice both to the audience and to the characters.

Rather than having Upton and Halstead break up, the show could and should have begun laying the groundwork for the pair to reconcile. While we understand Jesse Lee Soffer might not be interested in returning, the show could have found ways to showcase the couple mending fences using creative means such as text messages, one-sided phone calls, letters, email, the list goes on and on.

This could have then set the stage for Upton to leave the unit to reunite with Halstead off-screen which would have allowed fans to paint their own picture about what would be next for the couple. Instead, Upstead's time has been brought to an abrupt end without any real conclusion for the fans at home which is a true shame.
