We're days away from the Chicago Med season 12 premiere after a very long summer without our favorite Gaffney emergency department doctors. Last season, they each experienced a number of personal and professional changes, whether that included fighting for their job, grieving the loss of a loved one, or falling for someone they least expected.

Compared to the two other shows in the One Chicago franchise, Chicago Med might not have had the most explosive season finale with pressing cliffhangers, but when season 12 returns, there will be lots of detail fans need to remember. Before we rejoin the doctors for another season of drama, here are the four major things fans need to remember before season 12.

Chicago Med - S. Epatha Merkerson as Sharon Goodwin, Orlagh Cassidy as Miranda Lewis

Goodwin's job is on the line, and it's not looking good

Throughout the course of Chicago Med, Sharon Goodwin has been no stranger to putting her job on the line to fight for what's right. But in season 11, she might have take that dedication to her work a step too far. Goodwin managed to get caught in the crosshairs of Charles' situation involving Theo's private medical files. When season 11 ends, Miranda's telling her to pack up her things.

As the season 12 synopsis revealed, someone's on the verge of being fired, which could very well be Goodwin. She could have already been ousted. It's especially ironic since earlier in season 11, Goodwin helped performance a life-saving procedure on Miranda while they were traveling on an airplane. You would think saving someone's life would prevent them from ending your career.

We have no doubt that Goodwin will land on her feet in some way, but it's not going to be smooth sailing to get there. She and Charles will likely be facing some conflict in their usual strong friendship and working relationship. Gaffney will have to pull together to stand behind Goodwin on this one.

Chicago Med - Sarah Ramos as Dr. Caitlin Lenox, Luke Mitchell as Dr. Mitch Ripley

Lenox will be missing for at least five episodes

Although the season 11 doesn't set up an exit for Lenox at all, she will not be present when Chicago Med season 12 begins. If you haven't kept up with the cast since May, Lenox being missing will come quite as a shock to some viewers, but no one should be concerned.

Sarah Ramos announced her pregnancy toward the end of last season, and it's not being written into the series for her character. Because of the timing of her pregnancy and the way it lined up with the start of production late this summer, Ramos won't be seen in a handful of episodes.

The actress' maternity leave will span the first five episodes of the new season, but she's expected to return following this temporary absence. Lenox's extended absence will likely be explained, probably by Ripley, in the premiere. Hopefully, they're still going strong in their relationship.

Chicago Med - Steven Weber as Dr. Dean Archer, Jessy Schram as Dr. Hannah Asher

Asher and Archer's relationship is still in flux

In the Chicago Med season 11 finale, Asher gave birth to her and Archer's baby girl Mabel. Following the birth, Archer finally confessed his love to Asher. She didn't directly turn him down, but she made him know that she wasn't ready to have that conversation quite yet.

Chicago Med showrunner Allen MacDonald has confirmed that Asher and Archer still aren't an official couple when we meet back up with them in season 12, though they have taken at least one big step forward. Since they're co-parenting a newborn, they are living together.

Sarah Ramos might be on real-life maternity leave at the start of the season, but Asher's still very much on her maternity leave and isn't back to work. But we can expect some big decisions to happen on but Asher's personal and professional lives in the premiere.

Chicago Med - Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut as Dr. Naomi Howard, Darren Barnet as Dr. John Frost

Frost and Naomi will likely be broken up

Again, if you haven't been following along with Chicago Med updates since the season 11 finale in May, you probably aren't expecting to read that Frost and Naomi are splitting up. But that has to be the case given the unexpected exit news that arrived in September.

Ashlei Sharpe Howard announced her departure from the series as Dr. Naomi Howard, which comes as a shock to fans since her exit wasn't set up at all in the season 11 finale. Frost dealt with the tragic passing of his father and reconciling with him before his death in the finale, not his relationship.

In fact, in a new promo for the One Chicago shows, Frost is shown hooking up with another woman. Clearly, he's already moved on from his grieving process and the apparent end of his relationship with Naomi, which is his right. But we're going to need to see how he got to this point.

Chicago Med season 12 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 8/7c on NBC.
