When Chicago Med returns for season 12 next month, a new doctor will be scrubbing in, and we finally know the identity of Gaffney’s newest addition!
One Chicago Center previously reported that a pair of new additions would be making their way to Gaffney via the Chicago Med season 12 premiere, and we now know one of these new additions will be played by actress An-li Bogan! According to Rotten Tomatoes cast listings for the premiere, Bogan will be playing Dr. Annie Wu, a new character fans will meet in the first episode of the season.
We received our first glimpse of Dr. Wu in the season 12 trailer via a brief clip from the ED where she was working alongside Dr. Dean Archer. No context was provided, making it hard to know what case they were working on together or what her exact role might be; however, if we had to guess, there are a few likely explanations.
First, we know that Dr. Lenox will be away at the beginning of the season with the show writing the character out temporarily to accommodate Sarah Ramos’ maternity leave. It’s unclear how the show is going to write Lenox out during this span of time, but it would be reasonable for the hospital to need another trauma surgeon to fill in while she’s away during that extended period of time. Knowing that Dr. Wu was working with Archer would support this theory as he often worked alongside Lenox on trauma cases in the ED.
There is also a chance that Dr. Wu could be a new resident. While Lenox will be MIA for the first five episodes for Ramos’ maternity leave, it seems we’ve seen the last of Dr. Naomi Howard with Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut announcing she would not be back for season 12. With Naomi set to be written out, it would stand to reason that a resident position would be available at Gaffney, and there is a good chance that Dr. Wu could be filling that position. Bogan appears to be around the same age as Chestnut, so it would be a natural fit for her to play a new resident.
It would also be possible for her to be a new intern, as it’s been a bit since Gaffney welcomed a new intern class, and this is something we could see the show revisit in season 12. Could Dr. Wu potentially be a fresh-faced intern looking to learn the ropes from Archer? It’s certainly a possibility.
Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to officially meet Dr. Wu, as we’re less than two weeks away from the Chicago Med season 12 premiere! Bogan is relatively new to the scene, having starred in only a few short films, with her most notable credits coming via roles in The Plan, After Yang, The Unsettling, and Love Life.
