As the countdown to the Chicago Med season 12 premiere continues and the returns of the One Chicago lineup in October get closer, we're learning more and more about what to expect this fall. Having expectations from the previous season's cliffhangers is one thing, getting teases from the showrunner is another, but seeing big changes firsthand in trailers is preferred.
This week, NBC released new trailers for all three One Chicago series, including a gripping promo for Chicago Med season 12 that previewed the premiere episode's medical cases revolving around a bride and a young girl. The trailer also hinted that there could be a death happening in one of the episode's medical cases and gave a first look at two new characters at Gaffney.
In the new teaser for season 12, Archer is seen interacting with two characters we have never met before. He approaches a woman sitting behind a desk, in what looks a lot like Goodwin's office, and in another scene, he's working with a new doctor. Both of these women appear to be new at Gaffney, though one—the doctor—seems much more welcome than the other.

The downside of seeing these two characters in the latest Chicago Med promo is that we don't know their names, we don't know the names of the actresses who play them, and we don't know in what capacity they will appear in season 12. But we do know that we're excited to learn more about their roles and what they will bring to the table, even if they are replacing other characters.
As fans likely know by now, Sarah Ramos will be taking a temporary leave in the beginning of the season, meaning Lenox won't be seen onscreen for multiple episodes. Ramos announced her pregnancy before the season 11 finale aired and likely gave birth sometime this summer right around when the rest of the cast reassembled in Chicago to begin filming.
In addition to Ramos missing an undisclosed amount of episodes at the start of the season for maternity leave, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut announced her departure from the series as Dr. Naomi Howard earlier this month. Fans had began to wonder whether Naomi would return in season 12 when her relationship with Frost kind of fizzled and she didn't appear on the new poster.
The new doctor that has seemingly landed at Gaffney could be a temporary stand-in for Lenox while she's away or a replacement for Naomi. She could even be stepping in for Asher, who's likely still on maternity leave when the new season begins. But it's difficult to parse any details about the emergency department's new doc from the limited footage of her from the latest season 12 promo. All we know so far is that she's teaming up with Archer.
Likewise with the other new character, there aren't many revelations to be had about the woman sitting behind Goodwin's desk. However, in the wake of Goodwin's job being on the line, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the board has already hired someone new who is dropping the hammer on the Gaffney ED, cutting staff members, and making the staff's life harder.
We'll find out more about the new characters joining the team when Chicago Med season 12 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 9/8c on NBC.
