Was the Chicago Fire midseason premiere worth the wait? Is Otis’s luck turning around? Here are our Chicago Fire season 6, episode 7 takeaways.

The Chicago Fire midseason premiere arrived Thursday, and while it answered some questions, there’s always something to talk about around Firehouse 51.

Season 6, Episode 7 was called “A Man’s Legacy” and told fans whether or not Ramon Dawson (guest star Daniel Zacapa) survived after being stabbed in the previous episode. But we also saw the future with Molly’s North and a surprising turn for Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).

If you missed any of this Chicago Fire episode or just want a refresher on the events we’re talking about, you can catch up with our “A Man’s Legacy” recap.

Here are our Chicago Fire season 6, episode 7 takeaways:

More from One Chicago Center

1) We can stop the cliffhangers now

We were surprised to find yet another One Chicago cliffhanger where a character was in potentially fatal jeopardy and yet, survived just fine. If you’re keeping score, that’s the third time this season—fourth if you thought Adam Ruzek might wind up dead on Chicago PD.

“A Man’s Legacy” is Chicago Fire‘s second cliffhanger, and fifth character on the chopping block, this season. No one has actually been killed. In fact, we haven’t even needed to worry too much, since the show didn’t drag out the suspense of either outcome for more than a few minutes.

It’s all a bit of a buzzkill; if we’re going to honestly worry about characters, we have to believe they could actually die. And so far this season, what we’ve seen is that they survive even in exceptional circumstances. It’s enough to make us say that we hope Chicago Fire season 6 doesn’t end with a cliffhanger, too.

If there was any surprise, it was that Ramon’s hero story was actually true, and not something he made up for attention. Maybe he’s turning a corner?

2) Can Otis ever really catch a break?

“A Man’s Legacy” started out so promising for Otis (Yuri Sardarov). He was so excited about the grand opening of Molly’s North, he got to be in charge of it, and he was charming Lily (returning guest star Ariane Rinehart). But then things slid downhill, and we couldn’t help but cringe.

It seems like every time Otis has ever had an idea, what happens next is a series of bad luck and jokes at his expense. And while Yuri Sardarov is great at comic relief, you can’t help but feel like his character deserves for everything to go right just once, with all the times he’s been teased or kicked when he’s down. Can we have one story for Otis that’s good without him having to go through humiliation first? That’d be awesome.

Still, at least Lily seems to be interested in him, so perhaps that’ll work out. Who wouldn’t like to see an Otis romance? (And semi-related, what was Stella thinking going out with that jerk DJ?!)

3) You can’t keep a good director away

One of our favorite things about “A Man’s Legacy” took place off-camera. It was the return of Joe Chappelle, our favorite Chicago Fire director! He’s directed more episodes of Fire than anyone else and until this season was an executive producer. While he’s been busy directing his upcoming film, he came back to direct this episode, and we were extremely glad to have him back. It hasn’t been the same show without him.
