Will Chicago PD reveal a secret about Kevin Atwater this week? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago PD season 5, episode 12 preview.

If you’re a Kevin Atwater fan (and who isn’t), you’ll probably want to buckle your seat belt for this week’s episode of Chicago PD.

Season 5, Episode 12 is called “Captive,” and it’s already been well documented that the episode involves Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) being held hostage while the Intelligence Unit tries to locate and free him.

We also know that the key guest star in this episode is played by Mekhi Phifer (of ER fame); you can find out more about his character here.

So what’s all of this going to add up to?

From a purely entertainment standpoint, “Captive” could be really, really fun to watch. LaRoyce Hawkins is an excellent actor (his performances in episodes like “Snitch” and “Home” have reinforced that this season), so any episode that makes him the focus is automatically must-see TV.

Plus, Atwater being the victim means we get some opportunities to explore other characters’ reactions, like Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati). Not only is that her former partner, but Burgess is already on tilt from what happened to her last week, so how much will this push her even farther? And an angry Kim Burgess is a scary Kim Burgess.

Mekhi Phifer is a great choice of guest star as well; he’s done good work over the years on a number of TV shows, and he comes to the show with two of his own One Chicago connections.

Phifer co-starred with Monica Raymund in FOX’s Lie to Me, and before that, he guest starred with Chicago PD‘s Jon Seda on Homicide: Life on the Street. Phifer famously played Junior Bunk Mahoney, who shot up the entire police squad room with Seda’s Paul Falsone and several colleagues inside.

So these two guys know what they’re doing. The question is, what will the show do with them?

The episode’s official description gives away that there’s a personal connection between Atwater and his captor. So what kind of skeleton is Chicago PD season 5 going to pull out of his closet? He doesn’t even seem like the kind of guy to have skeletons in his closet.

Besides, this season has already been rough on Atwater. He had to send his beloved siblings to live in Texas in “Home,” and his partner Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) turned out to be the office mole, and now Chicago PD is having him kidnapped.

Hopefully it won’t make it worse by revealing that Atwater has some terrible secret, too. That’s not the character we know, and “Captive” is all set to be a showcase for the character we know and love.
