Chicago Fire explores Kelly Severide’s past and future again. Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 6, episode 10 preview.

Is Chicago Fire tempting Kelly Severide to leave Firehouse 51?

That’s certainly what NBC wants fans to think, based on the promo for tonight’s episode, entitled “Slamigan,” in which Severide (Taylor Kinney) crosses paths with someone else from his past.

Chief Grissom (played by guest star Gary Cole, whom you may remember as Bill Lumbergh from the classic 1990’s movie Office Space) comes to the firehouse with an idea for Severide.

Hopefully it won’t be about any TPS reports.

But seriously now, this week’s Chicago Fire season 6 storyline sounds an awful lot like we’ve been here before. If Grissom does offer Severide a job, what will make this episode different from when his father’s friend Dennis Mack (guest star Nick Boraine) offered Kelly the position in Springfield last season?

Of course, things are a little bit different than they were in season 5, when Severide was motivated by his love for Anna (Charlotte Sullivan).

He’s seen Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) promoted to Captain, and though he said he wouldn’t be interested in his own rise up the ranks, Chicago Fire has made it very clear that Severide slightly chafes at Casey’s new authority over him.

And the woman in Severide’s life, ex-girlfriend but still roommate Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), is about to hook up with another man (recurring guest star Daniel Di Tomasso, who returns in this episode).

So if you’re Kelly Severide, you might feel like you’re coming in second, professionally as well as in your personal life—and then here comes Grissom, and you’re his number one pick:

The question is how Chicago Fire is going to make “Slamigan” stand out from “An Agent of the Machine” last year. Will it really take into account those differences in Severide’s life, or will it feel like the same plot, told over again? And will it really be able to convince us that Severide could be open to a change?

Remember that this is the same character who, in five and a half seasons, has already flirted with leaving Chicago twice (once for Anna and once for Renee Royce when she went to Spain in the first season). So he has these thoughts every two years or so, and he never follows through. We don’t want any TV character to fall into the same patterns over and over again—especially Severide, as he could use to shake things up more than anyone.

So what will Grissom seriously offer him? How will Severide, and even Stella, react to the news? And most importantly, will we believe that he could take it? This could be a good, positive change he needs, or it could be the same song on a different day.
