One Chicago performer of the week: Taylor Kinney, Chicago Fire
By John Cave
Our One Chicago Performer of the Week for the week of January 30 is Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney for his work in the episode Law of the Jungle.
It’s time to name another One Chicago Performer of the Week, and the star who impressed us the most this past week was Chicago Fire star Taylor Kinney.
Taylor Kinney was front and center in “Law of the Jungle” as it was Chicago Fire‘s last episode of the month. And he went out on a high note.
“Law of the Jungle” saw Severide having to deal with issues on both fronts, as his old friend Chief Grissom (guest star Gary Cole) wanted to push him up the CFD ladder at any cost.
But at the same time, he was in the literal line of fire during the week’s calls, and the ending of the episode involved Severide having to make another life-changing choice.

We’ve been hard on Kelly Severide on this site in the past, because he can be a frustrating character. He’s known for acting on impulse, and when it comes to his personal life, he never seems to learn. He feels as if he’s stuck in a state of immaturity sometimes.
But as much of a mess as he can be, when the chips are down (or should we say when the fires are on?) Severide is locked in. After all, remember that this was a character who spent part of the early years covering up a major injury because he didn’t want to stop working.

“Law of the Jungle” showed Chicago Fire fans why we love Kelly Severide. Even though Severide disagreed with Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), he refused to throw him under the bus, although doing so could’ve benefited him. As he said later on, he just wanted to do his job without all of the fanfare.
And when the situation looked the most bleak, was anyone surprised that it was Severide who took the risk of going into the building to stop the gas leak? That it was Severide who rushed off to play hero when it became clear the only way to stop the gas leak was for someone to stay behind a la Bruce Willis in Armageddon?
That’s classic Kelly Severide, and so it was also classic Taylor Kinney. He brought all of Severide’s bravado, but in the same episode we also saw Severide’s humility, his loyalty, and being as selfless as you could possibly be. If Severide makes it out of that cliffhanger, he definitely needs a second commendation, and Taylor Kinney deserves one for his performance in this episode.
