Will Chicago PD dig into a hot-button issue in its latest case? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago PD season 5, episode 14 preview.

Tonight’s Chicago PD is the last episode before the show is preempted for the 2018 Winter Olympics, so there are two questions for One Chicago fans to consider.

Will the show follow Chicago Fire‘s lead and end on another cliffhanger? And will this episode focus on one of the more hot-button topics circulating in the headlines?

As far as the first it’s purely speculation. This does seem to be the season of cliffhangers for the One Chicago franchise.

Chicago PD started with giving fans the answer to one, if you count resolving the status of Erin Lindsay a cliffhanger since it wasn’t made clear on-screen what was going to happen with her at the end of season 4.

There was also a cliffhanger in this season’s fall finale, involving the fate of Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) after Ruzek was exposed as Denny Woods’s (Mykelti Williamson) mole in the Intelligence Unit.

And there are options to do another one, like perhaps Woods finally finds the thing he needs to definitely tie Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) to the murder of his son’s killer.

Or the obvious route of having a shootout or some other situation that leaves a character(s) in jeopardy.

But at the same time, there’s no obligation to hook the audience into coming back, because PD will only be off the air two weeks for the Winter Olympics. It’s not a huge break, so it’s not as if the audience is going to forget it before the end of February.

The plotline of the episode also raises a fair question. When the title of the episode is “Anthem” and the official description says it involves the death of a professional athlete, it begs the idea of if this installment is going to broach the topic of National Anthem protests.

Chicago PD doesn’t mention National Anthem protests in the synopsis, and it says that the player is killed after going to an anti-police rally, so it may just be putting together a story with a similar theme and not actually tackling the issue.

After all, the “ripped from the headlines” approach is more like Dick Wolf‘s Law & Order franchise than One Chicago.

Whatever approach Chicago PD season 5 takes Wednesday, it should be an interesting episode. If it does broach the issue of National Anthem protests, it’s a timely issue and one that viewers may have their own opinions about. If it goes with the anti-police angle instead, that’s going to be a big hurdle for Intelligence, because they’ll need the help of people who seriously don’t like the cops in order to solve the murder.

If it digs into either subject well enough, this will be a thorny episode of PD, which is always best when it plays in the grey areas. And that’s before we get into the fact that Denny Woods’s kid is in the spotlight. Hold onto your hats, this should be a nail-biter.
