Valentine’s Day is here and we’re celebrating with the relationship advice Chicago Fire has given us through Gabriela Dawson and Matthew Casey.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and nobody knows about love and romance better than One Chicago’s first couple: Chicago Fire‘s Matthew Casey and Gabby Dawson.

From early on it was obvious that Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Dawson (Monica Raymund) would end up together. Five and a half seasons later, Dawsey are married and still going strong.

What are the secrets to their success? What can One Chicago fans take away this Valentine’s Day from the happiness of the fandom’s original ship? And what makes them so adorable?

Here are the love lessons we’ve learned from Casey and Dawson:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Cuteness is cool

Casey and Dawson are adorable, with all the little things that they do for one another that make us melt. Remember in “Foul Is Fair” when Casey was missing Dawson so much that he was listening to her voice mail over and over? Or their spontaneous yet perfect wedding at the courthouse with all of their friends last season?

Or even how they just look at each other in certain scenes, like they’re the only two people in the whole world? They’re so cute it’s ridiculous, and that’s just who they are, not just on Valentine’s Day but every day.

It’s not only okay but encouraged for them to think of the small stuff, or find tiny ways to show their affection for each other—which is refreshing considering how much heaviness and drama Chicago Fire lays on us every week.

2) Communication is key

Dawson and Casey deserve props for their problem-solving skills. Their fights are the nicest arguments we’ve ever seen. Just look at this season; even when Casey is wary of how Dawson is handling the whole situation with Bria in “The Whole Point of Being Roommates”, he just calmly removes himself from the conversation. And at the end of the night they’re apologizing and hugging it out anyway.

Dawsey are the most chill couple on TV, and that’s because they’re generally good about talking things out. Plus, they can’t seem to actually get mad at each other for more than a scene or two. Who wouldn’t want a relationship like that?

3) Don’t be afraid to have separate lives

Dawsey are a united front, but one thing that Chicago Fire has done very well is that their whole lives don’t revolve around their relationship. Just because they’re a pairing doesn’t mean they’re not still getting to be individuals.

Casey was promoted to Captain this season, after previously being a city Alderman and let’s not forget the kick-butt episode in season 5 where he MacGyvered his way out of a chemical disaster. But in the same episode with his promotion ceremony, “A Breaking Point”, Dawson got to have a similar storyline where she used both brains and brawn to get herself and several bystanders out of a collapsed parking garage.

These two work great together, but they’re also good apart and they appreciate each other’s solo successes, too.

4) But always be there for one another

The biggest test of a relationship is what you do when the chips are down. Chicago Fire has put Dawson and Casey through heck, but that’s only given the show countless adorable moments in which they lean on one another.

Casey might die in a burning building? His speech to Dawson in “My Miracle” may be one of the show’s most romantic scenes. Dawson’s father inexplicably announces he’s divorcing her mom, sending her into a tailspin? There’s Casey to give her a hug. The whole Louie situation that we’re still kind of emo about? They were both there to help each other get through it.

Every challenge that Dawsey faces just seems to bring them even closer together.

5) Never give up on love

It has been a long, long road for Dawson and Casey. They both had other love interests; Casey was engaged to Dr. Hallie Thomas (Teri Reeves) for a while and tried to work it out with her before she died, while Dawson slept with Peter Mills (Charlie Barnett) and had a thing for Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) in Chicago Fire season 2. And even when Dawsey finally permanently got together, it still took the show until episode 100 for them to put a ring on it!

But we could never imagine either of them with anyone else. And so as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, we’re giving a round of applause to the couple who never gave up on their love story.
