Chicago Fire has Severide’s mom this week, so what do we expect? Look forward to tonight’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 6, episode 17 preview.

Tonight’s Chicago Fire features a Severide family reunion of sorts, so how much will meeting the other half of Kelly’s parents change the way we think about him?

In “Put White On Me,” Severide (Taylor Kinney) is surprised when his mother Jennifer (guest star Kim Delaney, Army Wives) turns up at Firehouse 51 unexpected.

There are so many questions involved in this: Who is this woman? Why is she there? Why is she there right now? And what can she tell fans about Severide’s history and perhaps, shade what we already know about his father?

A lot of interesting information could come out of this subplot, depending on how Chicago Fire is using Jennifer and how much time the episode has to devote to it.

After all, it’s unlikely that Severide’s mom just showed up to say “hi.” That doesn’t make good TV, for one, and there are also a lot easier ways for her to do that. If she’s showing up without telling him first, it feels like something has either happened or she wants something.

Then we just want to meet Severide’s mom. We want to see how different she is from Benny (Treat Williams), and how much of her we recognize in her son. It’s like the other half of a puzzle we’ve been putting together for six seasons.

So what else will we discover in the Severide family tree?

Moving on to the actual plot of this Chicago Fire installment, “Put White On Me” also features a rare misstep by Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker). Boden doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, so this is big.

What we hope doesn’t happen is that it contributes to his ongoing debate about whether or not to take that promotion offered last week and step out of the field—because that’s too similar to the Mouch (Christian Stolte) storyline last season. Mouch slipped up, wasn’t sure if he could do his job anymore, and almost retired. You don’t want to repeat storylines.

Last but certainly not least tonight’s Chicago Fire will also feature Otis taking on a desk job at the firehouse while he continues to recover. There are mixed feelings on this. On one hand, we’ve seen how making our crew do any other job can be hilarious (“Purgatory”).

On the other hand, this could get unintentionally emotional if this includes scenes between Otis and Connie, given the recent passing of DuShon Monique Brown. We don’t know how many episodes she had filmed before her death, so it’s possible that Connie could appear to “help” Otis in his new role. Even if she doesn’t, you know we’ll all be thinking it.

So there could be some tears, surprises and frustrations this week—sounds like a typical Chicago Fire episode, doesn’t it?
