Chicago PD season 5, episode 19 preview: Payback
Will Chicago PD have Hank Voight go too far even for him? Look ahead to tonight’s episode with our Chicago PD season 5, episode 19 preview.
With a title like “Payback,” you know this week’s Chicago PD episode is going to be something to talk about.
After all, when it comes to Hank Voight and the Intelligence Unit, payback could mean any number of unpleasant things—up to and including someone being killed.
So what kind of payback will Voight (Jason Beghe) be dishing out this week? Or could he even be on the receiving end?
That’s unpleasant to think about, but the official description of this episode from NBC tells us that Voight confronts a witness in the investigation regarding the murder of his son’s killer.

And Chicago PD fans know that he’s not going to show up for a polite conversation. (Has Hank Voight ever had a polite conversation?)
The problem comes when we think about the wider repercussions this subplot could have on the end of Chicago PD season 5.
Voight is already in hot enough water with the court case in the works against Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) for the murder. It’s only a brief jump to connect him to Voight, especially if Voight turns himself in as he said he would.
So now he’s going to go and presumably try to get this witness to go away? That’s witness tampering at best; it could be intimidation or worse, depending on what our hero’s idea of persuasion is.
If anyone else finds out what he’s about to do, that could be the nail in his proverbial coffin, as he’ll be actively interfering with an investigation against him.
Plus, what could tonight’s Chicago PD say about Hank Voight as a whole? There’s something noble if painful in him falling on his own sword to face the sins of his past, and protect Olinsky from life in prison. If he’s out there trying to scare off a witness, then it comes off as him just trying to save his own behind.
We’ll have to see how the subplot of “Payback” unfolds, and how it sets things up for the last few episodes of the season. But it sounds like there will definitely be consequences for someone here and they won’t be good.
