Today we’re saying happy birthday to former Chicago PD star Brian Geraghty and looking back at his character, hard-charging patrol officer Sean Roman.

Sunday is the birthday of Brian Geraghty, the Chicago PD alum who portrayed Officer Sean Roman for two seasons.

Though he’s no longer with the show (as Geraghty wanted to move on and pursue other career opportunities), Roman had his share of fans during Brian Geraghty’s tenure, both on his own and for his romance with partner Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati).

Roman was introduced in Chicago PD season 2 as Burgess’s new patrol partner following the move of Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) into Intelligence, and he couldn’t have been any more different from Atwater.

He was brash, unafraid to get tough, and also unafraid to give people attitude, as he did to the late Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) in the second season episode “Prison Ball”, when it was revealed that Roman was still angry at Olinsky for the death of a prior partner.

Though he wasn’t the most warm and fuzzy cop in the history of Chicago PD, you certainly couldn’t question Roman’s toughness. Counting the incident from “Prison Ball” he was gravely wounded three times in two seasons!

He and Burgess got in over their heads in the season 2 episode “What Do You Do” and it was Roman being shot that started off the Chicago PD season 3 episode “Justice,” which was the backdoor pilot for Chicago Justice.

Considering that, it really wasn’t a surprise when following that latest incident Roman decided to pack up and head to San Diego—wanting Burgess to go with him, but her heart was in Chicago.

What made Roman an interesting character was how different he was from the other men in her life: he was a different partner from Atwater and different love interest from her ex-fiancee Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).

Brian Geraghty gave him a very strong personality, which in turn not only made him watchable but we also got to see another side of Burgess through how she worked with Roman as compared to her relationships with Atwater and Ruzek.

Not to mention that Roman on his own was actually pretty flawed. Despite his toughness and all he went through, this was the same guy whose partner was shot while he was arguing with his own ex-fiancee. He also got into a fight with another officer, albeit for a good reason, in the second season episode “The Three G’s.”

But while he may never have been Chicago PD‘s Mr. Congeniality, he threw himself into everything he did. He certainly would’ve been nice to have around while Intelligence was battling Woods this season! Roman hasn’t been seen since his last episode, yet we hope he’s doing well out there in sunny San Diego.

What is Brian Geraghty doing now? He’s actually solving crimes in another TV show! Geraghty is now a series regular in TNT‘s period-procedural The Alienist, playing police commissioner (and future President of the United States) Theodore Roosevelt. You can watch the trailer here.
