Chicago PD’s Sydney Poitier Heartsong is back on TV with Carter; find out when and where Chicago PD fans can watch her new series.

Last summer, we told you that Chicago PD alum Sydney Poitier Heartsong had landed the female lead role in a new TV police series. Now we can tell you when and where you can watch.

Carter stars Heartsong as Detective Sam Shaw (previously named Sam St. Clair). It involves an actor who returns to his hometown and decides that playing a cop on TV makes him qualified to investigate cases in real life.

Jerry O’Connell (King & Maxwell) plays the actor, who is a childhood friend of Shaw’s and becomes her unofficial partner when he returns home after a very public Hollywood meltdown.

Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black) also stars as another childhood friend, who’s running a truck stop and may or may not get pulled into some of their investigations.

Carter is a Canadian TV series, but U.S. cable network WGN America announced this week that it picked up the rights to air the show in the United States.

The series will premiere on WGN America this summer, on Tuesday, Aug. 7. A specific time slot has yet to be announced.

You can find WGN America in your local listings by visiting their website.

During Chicago PD season 1, Heartsong—who was credited under her maiden name of Sydney Tamiia Poitier—recurred as Detective Mia Sumner.

She had the dubious distinction of being fired by Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) near the end of the season, and hasn’t been seen or mentioned since.

Sydney Poitier Heartsong’s new series is much lighter in tone, but it’ll also have some work to do in setting itself apart from other shows. This fall, ABC is premiering a series called Take Two with a very similar premise—a disgraced Hollywood actress (Rachel Bilson) teams up with a cop (Eddie Cibrian).

We’ve also seen the “actor thinks they can really do the job” idea in FOX‘s previous sitcom The Grinder, and the “cop with quirky not-cop” pairing in ABC’s Castle (which was created by the co-creator of Take Two) and USA‘s Psych and White Collar. Still, if you enjoyed Mia Sumner on PD, it may be worth a watch.

WGN America didn’t include anything from Carter in its press release this week, but there’s a trailer for Carter season 1 available via a TV channel in the Philippines that will also be airing the show. Check it out by playing the video below:
