The 5 best Chicago Med season 3 episodes
3. Down By Law
Coming in third on our countdown is “Down By Law” which was Chicago Med‘s first episode back after its preemption for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The episode brought the show back to viewers with a bang, literally.
Natalie was nearly shot in a drive-by shooting, only being saved by some return fire from Maggie’s ex Barry (recurring guest star James Vincent Meredith). Natalie did hit her head and wind up with a concussion in the incident, which led everyone to question her judgment, especially when she began to start a fight over the treatment of her latest patient.
We’ve been critical on this site before of how Natalie can be very opinionated and take actions based on her opinions, no matter what anyone else thinks. But “Down By Law” reminded us that quality can also be a strength, as she squared off with her patient’s husband, who was perfectly played by Jay O. Sanders (Blindspot).
Two of the subplots in “Down By Law” also worked really well. The shooting led Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) to uncover that Barry wasn’t even Barry; he’d changed his name years earlier. We don’t get enough of Marlyne Barrett in general, and she handled that subplot beautifully, with shock and pain.
The comedic relief in this Chicago Med installment came from Colin Donnell, as he discovered that his latest one-night stand (whose last name he didn’t even know!) was married. That was terrible enough, but Donnell’s always perfect facial expressions sold it. And this was where we also first saw the comic timing of Norma Kuhling, because naturally Ava had to rib Connor about what he didn’t know.
Between their great banter, Maggie’s heartache and Natalie’s headache, “Down By Law” had almost every aspect you could want out of a Chicago Med episode.
