Look back at where Chicago PD began this summer. Read our retrospective on the third episode as we rewatch Chicago PD season 1, episode 3.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago PD season 1, episode 3.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago PD season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

Episode three is titled “Chin Check” and in retrospect, there are just so many things that are either uncomfortable or just wrong.

The case of the week continues a thread from the previous week’s episode, which itself picked up from the series premiere, so there’s an ongoing through-line here, although it’s getting smaller by the week.

More from One Chicago Center

It involves Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) helping the kid he saved from Pulpo to get out of his gang, through Voight’s usual questionable methods of violence and exchanging money under the table (though this time he’s taking it rather than giving it).

But this is the episode where we first meet Voight’s son Justin (Josh Segarra). He’s getting out of prison, and the moment where he kisses Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) is just odd watching it again now—not only because we’re so used to seeing her with someone else, but because she’d hide the body of the man who killed him a few seasons later.

Plus, the episode ends with Chicago Fire‘s Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) crying on Lindsay’s shoulder and those two would subsequently kiss in a later episode, so knowing what’s coming makes that beat between Justin and Lindsay even weirder. But there’s more.

As part of the case of the week, “Chin Check” has Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) go undercover and he’s almost shot and killed—which is unintentionally tough to watch knowing that Olinsky has just been killed off in the most recent Chicago PD episode. Watching him nearly die just reminds us of the fact that he does die in “Homecoming.”

There are also two moments here that demonstrate how far Chicago PD season 1 is from where the show stands today. For one, we meet Adam Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) now ex-fiancee, Wendy; it’s interesting to see her and see their relationship knowing that Ruzek will later crush on Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and kiss her—while still engaged at the time. Then he’ll break up with Wendy, eventually get engaged to Burgess, and they’ll break up.

When you say it like that, Ruzek sounds like Chicago PD‘s version of Severide.

And last but certainly not least, Laura Dawson (America Olivo) asks her husband to invite his CI over for dinner, to thank the other woman for helping save their son. Do you think the Laura of today, who blew up at Sylvie Brett for little reason, would do that? Granted, this was about a CI and not a new girlfriend, but Laura’s characterization seems to have also changed a lot over the years.

“Chin Check” is a fine episode, but in retrospect it’s not so great a watch anymore knowing how some of these storylines end up. Still, if you want to look back at a very different slice of life, you can watch it again on iTunes and DVD.
