Look back at where Chicago PD began this summer. Read our retrospective on the eighth episode as we rewatch Chicago PD season 1, episode 8.

Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago PD season 1, episode 8.

If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago PD season 1 on iTunes and DVD.

Episode eight is called “Different Mistakes” and also introduces some different characters into the mix, who keep the audience (and our heroes) on their toes.

Plus, this is the episode where the show hints that Burzek is going to become a thing, so if you’re one of the many Burzek shippers, you’ll definitely want to look at this one again.

But “Different Mistakes” centers on a plot that will now sound really familiar to fans: Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) crossing paths with his former partner, who might be a dirty cop.

Yep, it’s like “Grasping For Salvation” four seasons earlier.

Yet it isn’t Denny Woods; this partner is Jimmy Shi, played by Mark Dacascos. Dacascos should look familiar to anyone who’s watched even a fair amount of television.

He portrayed the main villain Wo Fat on CBS‘s Hawaii Five-0, and in reality TV, you’ll recognize him from Dancing with the Stars and as The Chairman on Food Network’s Iron Chef America.

Here, however, he’s not revealing a secret ingredient. His character is hiding a secret that Voight, of course, ends up finding out. And just like the Voight-Woods relationship, this doesn’t go well. Dacascos, though, is a fine guest star and it’s a shame that this was the only episode in which he appeared.

Meanwhile, Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) is bumped down to patrol while Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is moved up to Intelligence for the first time. In retrospect, this part of the episode is kind of amusing, because we know it won’t be the first time Ruzek gets demoted or the first time Atwater gets promoted either.

“Different Mistakes” highlights something that’s a talking point as we go into Chicago PD season 6: the importance of the patrol officer in the show’s grand scheme. With Burgess’s promotion that happened during season 4, there’s no longer a patrol officer in the series regular cast.

That ostensibly makes the show easier to write, because all the characters are working on the same team, have the same information, and scripts don’t have to find a way to work in either a patrol subplot or some way for patrol to factor into the Intelligence case.

At the same time, there were some really good stories when there were beat cops. Ruzek getting knocked down a peg on the ego board is one, and there are plenty others. Will we miss that part of the show going forward? Only time will tell, but you can rewatch this episode on iTunes and DVD.
