1. Alvin Olinsky’s death

The choice to murder Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) isn’t just one of the roughest moments during Chicago PD season 5, but it’s going to go down as one of the most controversial choices in the whole show, and with good reason. It didn’t need to happen, and all it seemingly did was upset most of the show’s fanbase.

Showrunner Rick Eid explained why the show killed Olinsky by saying the writers wanted there to be a price Voight had to pay after the events of the season. But that’s not what we saw in the season finale; “Homecoming” revealed that Olinsky’s death was orchestrated by a villain from his past wanting revenge—a character audiences hadn’t even heard of before that episode.

What the show wanted to convey, and what was actually executed, were two different things. But the real issue with Olinsky’s exit is the long-term effect it will have on Chicago PD. Elias Koteas is a fan favorite, and as we’ve discussed previously, Alvin Olinsky will leave multiple holes within the show that can’t necessarily be filled by anyone else. Even whenever fans get over their frustration with the character’s death, the show still is going to be markedly different without him, and not in any good way that we can see.

The Chicago PD season 5 finale definitely had shock value in getting rid of Alvin Olinsky, but that’s about all it accomplished. It would’ve been much better to keep him around, and find some other way to illustrate Voight’s punishment.
