Former Chicago PD actress Sydney Poitier Heartsong returns to TV tonight in WGN America’s detective series Carter. Watch a first look at the show.

Sydney Poitier Heartsong fought crime on Chicago PD, but tonight she’s back in action in a new TV series called Carter. The show premieres on WGN America tonight, and we have a first look for you ahead of the debut episode!

One Chicago fans will remember Sydney Poitier Heartsong for her recurring role as Detective Mia Sumner during the first season of Chicago PD. She briefly worked in the Intelligence Unit but Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) ultimately had her transferred.

In Carter, the actress is playing another detective—but the tone of the show and its cast could not be more different.

Her character Sam Shaw is still carrying a badge, but she’s working in a small town instead of a major city, and the show opens with her getting some involuntary help on her latest murder case.

When Shaw’s best friend Harley Carter (Jerry O’Connell, King & Maxwell) returns to town after ruining his acting career, he decides that he’ll assist her with her cases—even though his only police training is playing a cop on TV.

Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black) also stars as Dave Leigh, the owner of a local truck stop and friend to both Sam and Harley, who inevitably is swept up in their various adventures.

This is an interesting viewing choice for One Chicago audiences. The character played by Sydney Poitier Heartsong is similar enough to Mia Sumner that it feels familiar, especially since it’s also another detective series; that makes it an attractive appetizer while waiting for the new cycle of Chicago PD to start next month.

But at the same time, Carter is going to be much lighter than anything fans are normally used to. Jerry O’Connell is well known for his work on a number of comedy TV shows, and he has a high energy that will definitely contrast with her position as the proverbial “straight woman” to the various antics of his character. This will also appeal to anyone who’s enjoyed shows like Psych or The Grinder.
