Chicago PD season 1, episode 9 rewatch: A Material Witness
Look back at where Chicago PD began this summer. Read our retrospective on the ninth episode as we rewatch Chicago PD season 1, episode 9.
Over the One Chicago summer break, we’re looking back at where it all began by rewatching the first seasons of our shows—and today we’re revisiting Chicago PD season 1, episode 9.
If you want to rewatch this episode along with us, you can find Chicago PD season 1 on iTunes and DVD.
The ninth episode is called “A Material Witness” and it’s referring to Lexi Olinsky (recurring guest star Alina Jenine Taber), who witnesses a murder.
In retrospect, the family members of Chicago PD characters have a terrible track record when it comes to investigations. While it’s not uncommon for TV shows to involve someone close to home in plots, this show has taken it to a new level.

Olinsky’s daughter and Atwater’s brother have both been the sole witnesses to crimes, while Voight’s son, Antonio’s son, Burgess’s sister, Platt’s father and Lindsay’s mother have all been directly involved in cases. That’s kind of harsh, show.
Lexi Olinsky sees a gang shooting, and Intelligence takes the case in hopes of protecting her from the culprit. It’s interesting to compare this episode to Jordan Atwater’s story from Chicago PD season 5, because the two are actually fairly similar.

While the team is able to nab the shooter in both cases, the success of a future prosecution ultimately rests on whether or not the family member is going to testify.
We saw Jordan get nervous about it in “Snitch” but Lexi’s reaction is the opposite. It’s her father Alvin (Elias Koteas) who’s worried, and she assures him that testifying is the right thing to do so she’s going to do it. It’s bittersweet, knowing she’ll wind up being the victim of another crime in “Emotional Proximity” three seasons later.
There’s a subplot involving future couple Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) teamed up again, this time trying to plant and then locate a cell phone. Ruzek being distracted by inappropriate pictures sent by his then-fiancee feels pretty dated now, knowing that he’ll ultimately end up breaking that off, being engaged to Burgess, and then that won’t work either.
“A Material Witness” is also the first appearance for Detective Mia Sumner, played by Sydney Poitier Heartsong (then credited as Sydney Tamiia Poitier). If you’re wondering what she’s up to now, find out about her new TV show here.
Overall, Alina Jenine Taber steals the show in an otherwise fairly run of the mill episode. Watch it again on iTunes and DVD.
