MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS:
Kevin Atwater had another low-key season, with two major developments.
The first was the departure of his siblings, who were sent to live with other family in Texas for their own safety after Jordan Atwater witnessed a shooting in “Snitch.”
The second was Atwater himself being abducted in “Captive” where he had to confront the father of a young man he had shot in the line of duty earlier. It wound up being one of the season’s best episodes, and luckily Atwater got out in one piece.

ANALYSIS:
It’s hard to judge Atwater’s season, simply because there’s not a lot that happened to him, for the second season in a row. The loss of his siblings was a big turning point for him, but they left town off-screen after “Home” and aside from a reference in “Fallen” have not been mentioned since.
“Captive” was a great episode, but it was about Atwater settling up with his past, not anything that affected his future. So all in all, when one looks back at this Chicago PD season for Atwater, what stands out isn’t so much what happened to him as that it was another season where we really could have used more of him.
PROGNOSIS:
Our wish list for Kevin Atwater is the same thing that we wanted last year for him: more screen time. Atwater is such a reliable support for every other character, but he doesn’t get as much that happens for him. And in Chicago PD season 5, the biggest thing that happened for him was a bad thing—having to give up the people he loves most.
The best thing that the sixth season can do is what the fifth season didn’t: rectify that and allow Atwater to have his family life back. Then past that, just give him more of a life in general. Let him have a love life like Halstead, Burgess and Ruzek, or let him take lead on a case, or just say he’s gone to take a vacation in Hawaii. Anything that fleshes him out a bit more and gives him more of a chance to shine!
