Chicago PD alum Samuel Hunt is the star of the new movie Unbroken: Path to Redemption, which is a follow-up to the biopic Unbroken.

If you’ve missed Samuel Hunt on Chicago PD, you can catch him on the big screen this weekend as the star of a new movie.

Hunt is front and center in Unbroken: Path to Redemption, playing Olympic athlete and World War II veteran Louis Zamperini.

If that name or the movie’s title sound familiar, you’re probably thinking of the 2014 movie called Unbroken, directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Jack O’Connell as Zamperini.

Path to Redemption bills itself as a “spiritual sequel” to that movie—meaning that it takes place after it and tells the same story, but it’s not a formal sequel because none of the original cast or creative team participated in it.

Instead, this new movie casts Samuel Hunt as Louis Zamperini, and focuses on how he returned from the war to find a new outlook on life through evangelical Christianity.

It’s directed by Christian filmmaker Harold Cronk (God’s Not Dead) and written by Richard Freidenberg (A River Runs Through It) with Ken Hixon.

Unbroken: Path to Redemption is a big role for Hunt, whom One Chicago fans will remember as tech guru Mouse on Chicago PD.

His character was written out of the show during the fourth season, as Mouse decided to leave the team and re-enlist in the military, over the concerns of his old friend Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer).

Mouse did get a goodbye scene, but it was never shown on the air; instead, it was posted as a deleted scene on the Chicago PD YouTube, and has since been taken down from the channel. But you can still see him in this classic clip, and here’s the Unbroken: Path to Redemption trailer:

Playing Louis Zamperini is completely different from playing Mouse on Chicago PD, but that makes this an interesting opportunity for One Chicago fans. If you want to see Samuel Hunt not behind a computer, in a period piece, getting a lot more screen time—he’s the star of this movie—then it’s worth a watch for you.

There’s also another One Chicago connection, too, as Chicago Fire recurring guest star Gary Cole is also in the movie, as the character Dr. Bailey.

This is the second week in a row that a movie has come out with One Chicago alums in the cast; last Friday saw the release of Peppermint, which includes Chicago Med‘s Jeff Hephner and new Chicago Fire cast member Annie Ilonzeh.
