What should One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago PD? Look closer at last night’s episode with our Chicago PD season 6, episode 7 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from this week’s Chicago PD episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “Trigger.”

“Trigger” featured Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) facing a former soldier who had misplaced anger and was unleashing it with a series of bombs. Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) went undercover and probably regretted it.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago PD recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Halstead had a problem

“Trigger” gave us the most honest assessment of Jay Halstead’s emotional state so far. After hinting at his war issues in the fourth season, then using it as a plot device in the fifth season, it took until season six for us to see him, on-screen, being clear about how his military past had skewed his perceptions.

The great thing here is that unlike “Care Under Fire,” when he sounded like he was just venting, now he was very specific about knowing his past had colored his judgment and wanting to change that. So it does finally feel like Jay has turned the page, and we can get started with that character growth Chicago PD has never entirely paid off.

Good for you, Halstead.

2) This is where “Chicago Wednesdays” doesn’t quite work

Remember when “Chicago Wednesdays” was first announced, and we talked about how it could make continuity more difficult? This is what we meant.

Jay Halstead appeared in last night’s Chicago Med chastizing his brother for screwing up the case he was working with the FBI, then two hours later he was here arguing with the FBI.

Obviously he wasn’t dealing with the same characters, but it does feel slightly wonky for him to be arguing about doing what the FBI wants in one episode and then arguing for what they don’t want in another.

Plus, this is a terrible week for the Halstead brothers, but because the two episodes are not part of the same storyline, Chicago PD didn’t make any reference to it. Halstead goes off to get a beer with Upton, even though both were on Med dealing with that chemical spill, so both know what happened there.

If these shows are going to air so closely together, it’d be great to either have the scripts reflect that better, or at least let the audience get a better sense of how time now works in this universe. Because to us, these big events are happening in the same general time frame, and so it comes across as odd when they’re not reacted to.

3) Atwater gets his screen time; is Platt next?

Let’s take a second to appreciate that “Trigger” gave Atwater a sizeable amount of screen time, by having him be undercover, and then getting arrested in a federal raid, and then being the guy who gave Halstead the information to get into the mosque. Plus, next week’s episode looks like it also focuses on him. That means a lot, since Atwater is one of the most underused characters in the whole One Chicago universe.

Seeing more of him, though, also begs the question of when Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) will have her chance to shine. She did appear in more than one scene this week, but she was basically there in a support function again, dropping off files and talking to Voight. Morton can do so much more so let’s hope she gets her opportunity now that LaRoyce Hawkins is getting his.
