Chicago Med season 4 midseason report card: What worked, what didn’t?
What didn’t work
The idea of Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) going behind Connor’s back to fund the hybrid OR was interesting when it was introduced, but the execution was flawed. The two never had the massive fight they could have, should have had. Instead, we got one scene of Connor being annoyed and an ending that involved him kissing her before she’d even completely apologized.
It felt as if, just like last season, Ava’s missteps were getting quickly pushed aside. Now the duo are dating finally, but it doesn’t feel like they’ve quite earned it because we never saw them truly resolve their issues. The show is giving us them making out in the hospital, but not anything of real substance, and we need that as we try to invest in their ship.
At this point it’s a push whether or not you like the storyline with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) as an undercover informant. There’s no doubt that it gave Gehlfuss some amazing material and it was full of dramatic scenes. But it also felt more like a plot for Chicago PD, and Manstead fans are probably not happy that Chicago Med teased us with a wedding for months only to ruin it (though it may still happen this season).
And is anyone else getting a little irritated by April Sexton’s (Yaya DaCosta) writing? Whether it was putting her feelings for Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) over her medical ethics, or having Choi’s ex return for another One Chicago love triangle, April hasn’t been cast in a flattering light for parts of the season so far. She deserves better.
