What happened to Ava on Chicago Med? Are Manstead really done? Look closer at this week’s episode with our Chicago Med season 4, episode 13 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from the latest Chicago Med episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “Ghosts in the Attic.”

“Ghosts In The Attic” featured Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) calling off her engagement after projecting her relationship issues onto her case. Meanwhile, Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) was injured while performing surgery on an HIV-positive patient.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago Med recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

More from One Chicago Center

1) Does Ava have a problem?

Everyone believed that Connor accidentally cut Ava until the final scene of “Ghosts in the Attic,” in which one of the staff members said how she’s always so careful—leaving both Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell) and the audience wondering if it wasn’t an accident.

So did she intentionally grab the scalpel as a way of trying to get Connor to worry about her? If she did, is Chicago Med going to tell us, or just leave it vague like we still don’t know whether or not she slept with his dad?

It would be exceptionally manipulative if she did it on purpose. But that’s also what makes the idea a bit nuts. Would she really be willing to risk contracting HIV just to get Connor’s sympathy?

This one could go either way because of how Ava has been written recently…but it almost feels more likely that the show threw that kernel of doubt in there just to keep us guessing.

2) Does Chicago Med have an Ava problem?

The other problem with this storyline is it continues the strange and frustrating way Ava has been written this season. It might be dramatic and entertaining, but it’s not at all good for her character.

If she did anything that she’s being accused of, she’s a lying, manipulative person who is willing to do anything to keep Connor—including sleep with his own father. That makes her look like the villain in a Lifetime movie, in addition to sending some very uncomfortable messages about Ava using her body for money. And there’s no way to write her back from that, unless this season ends with her being thrown out of the hospital and his life.

If she didn’t do these things, then Chicago Med has spent the whole season painting her in a really bad light. It’s particularly frustrating because Ava still deserves some development; she didn’t get a great introduction at the end of season 2 and the audience has needed time to warm up to her. It would’ve been great to learn more about her and develop her as a strong character this season, but none of this is accomplishing that.

3) Are Manstead actually broken up?

Natalie gave Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) back his engagement ring at the end of this episode, and Chicago Med obviously wants Manstead fans to think their relationship is over. But how much should we worry?

Remember, they’ve been through something similar before; they went “on a break” last season which led to that whole Dr. Frisch storyline. The bigger issue is the behind the scenes one. This show has invested so much time and effort into Will and Natalie, that it would seem very odd if they just threw it all away like this.

Plus, remember that the producers have confirmed there’s a second wedding happening before the end of the season. Do you see Chexton or Connor and Ava being anywhere even close to that? So don’t give up on Manstead yet.
