While Herrmann tried to cheer himself up with Cindy’s arrival, Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) confronted Casey about his increasingly snippy attitude and wasn’t convinced by the “it’s part of my job” spiel.

He and Severide also heard out Stella’s suspicions about the crawl space, and Boden gave her the go-ahead to call Chicago PD. Yay for crossover guest appearances in two consecutive shows!

Enter Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who heard Stella’s story and asked to visit the scene. However, when the trio went back to the building, the whole area had been destroyed in the fire. Without any evidence, Upton was sympathetic but also stuck.

In the common room, Cindy tried to explain interior design to the rest of the team. All of them had their different ideas about the room and what needed to be done with it, with Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) comparing the decor to 1987 and Brett coming with a stack of magazines, desperate for something to do in her post-Kyle world.

While they freaked out even more when Cindy revealed that the makeover had already been pitched to a magazine, Herrmann was upset when he found out Ritter would be sidelined for a few shifts and Casey had chosen a replacement without asking him. Casey snapped right back, saying anyone else would be writing Herrmann up for talking back to a Captain. Boden was not amused, and paid Herrmann a visit at home to explain that Casey was going through stuff.

Elsewhere, Upton arrived at Molly’s to tell Stella that there was nothing more Chicago PD could do. But Chicago Fire is full of amateur investigators, and Severide suggested that he and Stella speak to the woman who’d started the fire. Marylou told them that she had a bunch of her neighbor’s mail, all with different names. The mail included a letter from the government that made Stella think the neighbor was taking in foster kids and putting them in the wall.

They tracked the neighbor down in Pilson, and announced themselves as members of the Chicago Fire Department to get access to his new apartment. Lo and behold, Stella found another fake wall panel, which led to Severide almost getting stabbed. Chicago Fire does love Severide’s near-death experiences. Luckily, Upton had gotten Stella’s earlier message and was there to arrest the guy just as two more kids were found in another wall.
