What can Chicago PD fans learn from This City? Look closer at this week’s episode with our Chicago PD season 6, episode 18 takeaways.

What did One Chicago fans learn from the latest Chicago PD episode? Here’s what we took away from this week’s installment, “This City.”

“This City” featured Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) trying to stop a gang war. But when politics got in the way of his prosecution, Voight went to his usual outside the lines playbook in order to ensure that justice was done.

In other news, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) didn’t pay enough attention to a clue that Blair (guest star Charles Michael Davis) might not be the man she thought he was. But it might not matter, since she referred to their relationship as a “fling” anyway.

If you missed any of this week’s episode or just want a refresher on the events that we’re about to discuss, you can catch up with our Chicago PD recap.

Below are our takeaways from this week’s episode:

1) It’s time for new opens

All of the One Chicago shows have developed a habit of using their teasers (the scenes before the opening credits) to give random updates on the various ships in the fandom. Chicago PD has spent three episodes in a row starting with a Burgess and Blair scene, and it doesn’t work.

The first scene of a TV show is the first thing that viewers see; ideally it’ll be something that hooks the audience and gets them excited for the episode. This hasn’t been the case for PD, and even if it was, why not mix things up instead of going to the same topic three times in a row?

Of course, given the big spoiler that was dropped, maybe this is the show’s way of trying to get fans invested in a new storyline as quickly as possible. But that still doesn’t make it as interesting as these openings could have been.

2) Did Voight and Atwater go too far?

Longtime fans of Chicago PD probably saw the end of this episode coming. Essentially, Voight was enabling a murder in order to get justice and stop gang violence. But he also did the same thing last season, too. That’s two times in two seasons that he’s knowingly set someone up to be killed, and while those were bad guys, you have to ask at what point does this stop being okay? Because honestly, Voight has done enough things on this show to get himself thrown behind bars.

A similar sentiment could be expressed about Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins). He had a good intention, trying to protect a woman from gang retaliation. But should a police officer be making an effort to undermine his own investigation? Even if his reasons are understandable? This plot had people working against the system they swore to uphold, and that’s become the normal of this show. So do we just accept it because these are our protagonists?

3) Is Kelton an irredeemable piece of work?

One wonders if the direction John C. McGinley got when joining Chicago PD was just to be as big a jerk as possible. “This City” proved that Kelton no longer has any clue what it’s like to be a cop, by not only revealing the existence of a witness on TV but then showing zero remorse for it after he was alerted to the consequences.

Now obviously we’re not supposed to like Kelton, since he’s the recurring antagonist of the season. But he’s gone into that one-dimensional unlikeable territory, where there’s no fleshing him out or changing the audience’s mind. He’s just a jerk, and an unrepentant one. McGinley is great at playing him, but this episode established he’s not one of Chicago PD‘s more developed characters, and he probably won’t ever be.
