Chicago Med fan favorite Ato Essandoh is now starring in the CBS military drama The Code. Watch a preview here before tonight’s series premiere.

Fans who’ve missed Ato Essandoh on Chicago Med can see him starring in his own show on CBS tonight, as it’s time for The Code premiere.

The new drama focuses on members of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps while they serve as both prosecutors and defense attorneys on military-related cases.

Ato, who has recurred as Dr. Isidore Latham on Chicago Med since season 2, is a series regular here—so he’ll be in more episodes and have more screen time than he’s had in the One Chicago franchise.

In The Code, he portrays Major Trey Ferry. Ferry works on the prosecution side of things, where he’s also the superior officer to Captain John “Abe” Abraham (Luke Mitchell, Blindspot).

The series comes from the same network that had long-running success with the similar show JAG, and still has it with the JAG spinoffs in the NCIS franchise, so there’s a lot of promise here.

In what’s perhaps a nod to the similarity, The Code is premiering between new episodes of NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles at 9 p.m. tonight before moving to what will be its regular Monday time slot.

But the biggest reason to watch this show is the cast. Chicago Med fans know how greatly talented Ato Essandoh is; while he’s made a few quick stops by this season, they’ve only served to highlight how great of a character Latham is and how the show has truly missed him.

Likewise, Luke Mitchell was a scene-stealer playing Roman on Blindspot (amusingly, Blindspot alum Michael Gaston appears in tonight’s The Code premiere) and it will be great to see him back on a show with a more expanded role. Phillipa Soo is known from Hamilton, and Dana Delany is a TV veteran who has led a number of shows, most recently Body of Proof.

Especially with the One Chicago franchise taking the week off, there’s every reason to tune into this show and see what Ato Essandoh’s doing now. He’s a tremendous actor, and getting to see him as one of the regular protagonists rather than in a supporting role should be a real treat.

And it doesn’t necessarily mean we’ve seen the last of him either, as evidenced by how Latham has been seen at the hospital this season! Watch a preview by playing the video below, then tune in to The Code tonight to catch Ato Essandoh in an awesome new role.
