3. Surprise proposals

Two of the three One Chicago series included characters with marriage proposals—both of which came entirely out of the blue. On Chicago Fire, Kyle Sheffield (Teddy Sears) got down on one knee for Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who agreed to marry him before he moved to Indiana.

There are a couple of problems with that. They weren’t even together at the time. Even if they had been, the life span of their relationship is maybe six months (according to Brett earlier this season, it had been “three months” not too long before they split). Why did Kyle propose, instead of simply getting back together with Brett again? Long-distance relationships can be harder, but they’re possible.

And Chicago Fire fans hardly got to see their relationship develop in the first place, so there’s no context for why Brett would say yes. Her explanation given—that after Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) said she should be with Kyle, she decided he was right—makes little sense. It gives the impression that Brett made a major life decision based on Casey’s opinion, not her own.

Even stranger than that, though, was Chicago Med having Phillip Davis (recurring guest star Ian Harding) decide he was going to propose to Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto). At least Kyle had somewhat of a reason for being impulsive, with him leaving town. But Phillip and Natalie haven’t been together that much longer, and again, this is a man whose wife died probably less than a year ago. And he’s already decided that he’s ready to get re-married?

Plus, the season finale never told One Chicago fans if there was something going on with Phillip or not. It planted the seed with his apparent fib about having a ranch in Texas, but then never brought that up again. So is Natalie dating somebody suspicious or not?

At least Phillip never actually proposed (that One Chicago audiences saw), but both Chicago Med and Chicago Fire felt like they didn’t need to have this happen.
