Chicago Fire season 7 finale takeaways: I’m Not Leaving You
What can Chicago Fire fans learn from I’m Not Leaving You? Look closer at this week’s episode with our Chicago Fire season 7, episode 22 takeaways.
What did One Chicago fans learn from the latest Chicago Fire episode? Here’s what we took away from the season finale, “I’m Not Leaving You.”
“I’m Not Leaving You” featured Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) still pursuing the serial arsonist that his father had tried to catch years earlier. While he also rekindled his relationship, another possible couple hit a massive speed bump in the form of an entirely unexpected proposal.

1) Where does Severide go now?
The finale seemed to be another turning point for Severide, between handling this arson case and its connection to his dad, and how he finally got back together with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).
Chicago Fire fans have been saying it’s time for Kelly to mature and move forward since Anna happened in season 5. That was two years ago, and he hasn’t shown that much growth—so could this be where it finally takes place?
Severide no longer has the baggage of his frayed relationship with his dad (or trying to make his dad proud) to carry around, and he’s not angsting over Stella either. He seems to be free of much of what he’s continually struggled with, so there’s a ton of possibility with his character.
Let’s just hope he stays free and clear, and the writers don’t find a reason in the coming season to break up Stellaride again and cause another angsty relapse.

2) How serious is Brett’s engagement?
The most surprising moment in the finale was Kyle Sheffield (Teddy Sears) proposing marriage to ex-girlfriend Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer), who accepted, seemingly putting aside her feelings about Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer).
It shocked Firehouse 51, as well as Chicago Fire fans, considering that Kyle and Brett hadn’t gotten back together before he popped the question—and they’d only dated for a few months in the first place! While you can cut Kyle some slack by saying he acted impulsively since he’s about to start a new job out of state, is Brett truly ready to marry him? And thus commute from, if not move back to, Indiana?
Logistically, it’s hard to see this one panning out. Could the writers really have Brett married to a character who’s not going to be around that much? And considering how emotional she got when they broke up, how much will she go to pieces if they end this engagement? This is either going to be great, or a tremendous heartbreak.
3) What’s next for Firehouse 51?
The season finale was relatively painless in a big-picture sense. After trying to keep Carl Grissom (Gary Cole) from becoming fire commissioner, and then finding out that he’s had a change of heart, there isn’t that power struggle for the firehouse to deal with. There isn’t a political problem either. It seems like smooth sailing for the crew—but knowing this show, that’s too good to be true.
It’ll be interesting to see where the writers take 51 next season. They’ve dealt with so many bad supervisors and outside influences that it feels like they’ve had more than enough drama. But on the other hand, you always want the firehouse to evolve. So audiences will have to keep an eye out for what the big picture looks like going into season 8. It feels like anything is possible.
