Chicago PD season 6 had huge stakes, but which episodes were the most memorable? Here are the best Chicago PD episodes from this season.

This Chicago PD season strove to tell a bigger story about the city and its political future, while also having case of the week plots—it was a season that tried to have a little bit of everything.

Throughout the whole season, One Chicago fans waited to see who would be named the next mayor of Chicago, while hoping it wasn’t Superintendent Brian Kelton (recurring guest star John C. McGinley), after his various crimes were exposed.

At the same time, one character embarked upon what would be his last season, there were two new couples that emerged, and those couples didn’t make it through the season either. In all of this, which episodes stood out above the rest?

Here are our picks for the three best episodes from Chicago PD season 6; let us know which episodes would be on your short list in the comments at the end of the article.

3) Ties That Bind

This episode was pretty obvious in its intentions; it wanted to put Hailey Upton and Kim Burgess (Tracy Spiridakos and Marina Squerciati) in a room and deal with the awkwardness of Upton dating Burgess’s ex-fiance.

Even if the plot was a bit heavy-handed in that respect, there’s no denying that both Spiridakos and Squerciati gave excellent performances. The latter has been an undervalued part of the One Chicago universe for years, while the former has proven to be a wonderful addition to the series.

It was great to watch them work, and see how their characters worked together, which is something that hasn’t happened often. Hopefully, it’ll happen more next season, because they made an outstanding pair and carried the episode, demonstrating how One Chicago has strong female characters that aren’t stereotypes either.

2) Trigger

Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) came more into his own this season, now that the focus has gone back to Jay’s professional life. That was on display in this episode, where Intelligence originally had suspected Muslim extremists, and then found out the real bad guy was an Army Ranger.

It was a clear opportunity to play with Halstead’s past as a Ranger, but also to make a statement about not prejudging people—something that felt even more timely in our current society. And in being asked to carry the episode, Soffer hit it out of the park, particularly in Halstead’s conflicted feelings toward the suspect, and especially his impassioned speech near the end (which you can watch again below).

Between that, a fantastic Halstead and Upton moment at the end that continued to develop their partnership, and some good undercover scenes involving Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), this episode was better than advertised.

1) Black and Blue

Speaking of Hawkins, Chicago PD fans can all agree that he’s extremely underrated, and episodes that he is the center of always deliver. This season, that episode was “Black and Blue,” which gave Atwater a new love interest—and a new headache.

He was excellent in this installment as Atwater was forced to balance being an African-American with being a cop, both from Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) and his new girlfriend Laila (an outstanding Milauna Jemai Jackson). That wasn’t really fair to him, and Atwater was able to speak his mind and try to make a difference.

Of course, it had a tragic ending, as many episodes of this show often do. But it showed why Kevin Atwater is an important part of the One Chicago universe. It’s not because of his race; it’s because he stands for everything that makes Chicago PD great. And this installment gave him a chance to shine.
