FBI season 2 is continuing to expand the show’s cast, with Law and Order and Bones alum John Boyd coming aboard as another new agent.

When FBI returns for its second season next month, the Dick Wolf series will have not one but two new agents joining the team. John Boyd, who got his TV start in two episodes of Wolf’s Law & Order, is joining the CBS procedural.

Fans know Boyd primarily for his role on Bones, where he played another federal agent for that show’s final three seasons. His character James Aubrey was promoted in the series finale, which aired in 2017.

On FBI the actor will play Special Agent Stuart Scola, who joins the team having some kind of a past relationship with his new supervisor Jubal Valentine (Jeremy Sisto). He’s described as being “handsome, smart and irreverent.”

Boyd is the second new addition to the show’s cast—former Law & Order star Alana de la Garza was confirmed as the new unit chief in July.

But here’s where things get interesting. Deadline is reporting that while the actor is only contracted for three episodes next season, the show has the option to make him a series regular if they like his character and want to keep him around.

There’s no guarantee that will happen—fans of the One Chicago universe know that several actors have had similar deals and not been kept around—but it’s a sign that producers are trying to grow the cast and the show’s universe now that they have a second season.

While Boyd is known primarily for Bones, his first two TV credits came in episodes of Law & Order. He played Zack Burns in the season 15 episode “Locomotion” back in 2005, then returned portraying Kenny Ellis in the season 17 installment “Profiteer” two years later.

That makes him yet another cast member who has previous connections to Dick Wolf. Both Sisto and de la Garza were series regulars on the original Law & Order before they joined FBI, and both Ebonee Noel and Missy Peregrym guest starred in Law & Order: SVU first.

What will John Boyd bring to the series this season? And what kind of story will he initially have over those three episodes? Will it further explore Jubal’s past, which was only briefly detailed in the installment “Conflict of Interest” during the first season?

After all, a lot of characters on TV shows are described as good-looking and irreverent, so the Scola character has to stand out in some way for the audience to care about him—certainly if the writers want the viewers to like him enough for him to become a regular. Keep an eye on this casting choice and see if it’s part of a larger idea when the second season premieres Sept. 24.
