What should happen

Maggie’s life has the potential to completely change in Chicago Med season 5, because of both on and off-screen developments for the show. And if we learned anything from last season, it’s that some change can be good—just not necessarily the changes that the writers seem to be headed for.

The cancer suggestion felt like something thrown into the season finale for dramatic effect. The best way to handle that would be for it to turn out as a false alarm, and Maggie moves on. To say she has cancer would just open up a whole can of worms, because the writers would have to put a whole lot of screen time in to do it any justice, or it’d come off as not taking a very serious health problem seriously enough.

And Chicago Med has a track record of giving characters big problems, then moving past them quickly if the show has other things to do (see: Dr. Charles getting shot followed by a fairly quick time jump, Robin Charles’ recovery being generally pushed aside after the season 2 finale).

There’s also the question of what happens to Maggie’s work in the hybrid OR. Though Connor is gone, spoilers have revealed that the hybrid OR will remain in operation. The most interesting part of her season was seeing her branch out into another part of nursing, so she should get the chance to continue that work with whoever takes over. Her character shouldn’t be shortchanged because of a producers’ decision made for another character.
