Chicago PD season 7 character preview: Hailey Upton

What will happen

Don’t think that Upton’s love life will be out of the Chicago PD headlines anytime soon. The clues out there suggest that it’s still very relevant—but not with the person you’d expect. In his recent spoiler chat with TVLine, showrunner Rick Eid teased that another romance in the office was what his team was “writing toward” when the show returns.

And it’s fairly telling that the show’s official YouTube channel posted a video focusing on Upton’s “burgeoning relationship” with her partner Jay Halstead during the offseason. Normally, the hiatus videos are about parts of each One Chicago show they want to promote, but instead of hyping up the Upton and Ruzek relationship they spent last season building, they want fans to be talking up Upton and Halstead?

So don’t be surprised if Halstead winds up flirting with his new partner, and we have a sort of Jay and Erin-esque situation all over again.

Eid has also related that Upton will make a new friend in Vanessa Rojas, the character who’s being added to the team this season. So we’ll see Upton getting the spotlight there, in addition to what may happen with her romantically, and of course actually closing cases. It’s clear she’s still going to have a prominent position on the show.

With her moral stance (though it’s become a lot more flexible than it was in seasons 4 or 5), will she become the new voice of reason after Antonio Dawson’s (Jon Seda) departure? Or will Upton continue to be the female lead the way that she emerged last season? If you’re a fan, Chicago PD will have a lot to show you in season 7.
