Station 19 and The Fosters alum Lisseth Chavez has joined the cast of Chicago PD for their upcoming seventh season in a new recurring role.

Chicago PD has added yet another new face to its upcoming season 7 roster. In addition to Paul Adelstein’s casting as interim superintendent Jason Crawford, the NBC police drama has cast Lisseth Chavez in the recurring role of Vanessa Rojas, a street smart, tough as nails undercover cop.

Chavez’s contract does have the possibility of extending into a regular role, which coincides with Jon Seda’s departure from the show, though there’s no word that she’s actually meant as his replacement.

That possibility exists because this isn’t the first time Chicago PD has cast a new character in a recurring capacity with the possibility of extension. Tracy Spiridakos’ character of Hailey Upton first recurred during Chicago PD season 4 before getting signed on as a series regular for the fifth season.

Her arrival also coincided with Sophia Bush‘s exit from the series at the end of season 4.

However, the writers did such a great job at working in Spiridakos’ character little by little, that the adjustment into Chicago PD without Bush was not as jarring to fans as it could have.

Here’s hoping the same thing can happen if Chavez’s character does end up replacing Seda’s character Antonio Dawson.

This is not the first time Lisseth has been on a first responder type of television program. She just finished a few episodes on the popular ABC medical drama Station 19.

Her character Kathleen “Kat” Noonan was a fire academy candidate who checked out the station to see if it could be a potential home for her.

Now it seems Lisseth has found a home with NBC on Chicago PD, and she couldn’t be a better addition to the great ensemble cast of PD, thanks to her previous experience in portraying multifaceted characters with a “rough around the edges” exterior.

Besides her short stint on Station 19, Lisseth had a recurring role on the Freeform show The Fosters. Her character of Ximena Sinfuego brought to life a young woman who was determined not to let her status or past overtake her future.

After immigrating to the US, Ximena secured admission into USCD. There she used her artistic talents in an activist role, all while coming to terms with her own sexuality. This revelation was not only important in today’s climate, but also showed that Lisseth can play both tough and vulnerable sides of a character.

With her amazing portrayal of such a complex and modernized woman, it’s easy to see how Lisseth can bring these talents into her new role on Chicago PD. While her character Vanessa may not be fighting for a specific cause, she is still seeking justice for all people—especially for the citizens of Chicago.

It would be interesting to see how Vanessa’s edgy streetwise background prepared her to become a cop, especially as a proper introduction for Lisseth’s first few episodes.

If the writers do decide to proceed with making her a regular, perhaps it can be a good way to play off the aftermath of Antonio Dawson’s absence. Fans will remember that at the end of season 6 (“Reckoning”), Antonio’s future with Intelligence kind of went up in smoke.

Will the arrival of a new detective bring more drama into the unit? Or will Vanessa Rojas bring a new set of skills that will help the Intelligence unit in their time of need?

Lisseth is represented by the Osbrink Agency and has officially begun work in Chicago, as she recently posted a couple of Instagram stories from the hair and makeup trailer. We are glad she’s having fun getting into character, and we cannot wait to see Vanessa Rojas when Chicago PD‘s seventh season starts September 25.
