Where we left off: Corrupt police superintendent Brian Kelton (recurring guest star John C. McGinley) was elected mayor of Chicago. But before he was able to take office, someone murdered Kelton in his own home.
As the Intelligence Unit was called to the crime scene, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) was driving off somewhere. (You can re-watch the cliffhanger and read our prediction here.)
Who’s out:
- Jon Seda, who was dropped from the show after season 6 as the producers felt his character Antonio Dawson had run out of storylines.
Who’s in:
- Lisseth Chavez (Station 19) will be a recurring cast member as new cop Vanessa Rojas, who befriends Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). It’s important to note that Chavez is recurring, not a series regular—at least for now—so she’s not a direct replacement for Seda.
- Paul Adelstein (Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce) will portray the interim Superintendent taking over after Kelton’s death.
- Michael Beach (Third Watch) is the season’s new antagonist, a business-savvy drug dealer whose criminal enterprise is supposedly aimed at helping the city of Chicago.

What we know so far (SPOILERS):
- Antonio will be missing in the season premiere, which picks up immediately after the season 6 finale.
- The producers are writing toward a new interoffice romance, which may or may not happen, and may involve Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins).
- Any or all of the show’s three non-detectives—Atwater, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati), and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger)—may or may not earn a promotion to the rank of detective this season.
Chicago PD season 7 premieres Sept. 25 at 10 p.m. on NBC.
