What’s going to happen in Chicago Med season 5? Ahead of the Chicago Med season premiere, check out our predictions for the upcoming season.

The new Chicago Med season arrives next week, bringing fans back to the hospital for more medical—and personal—drama. But what form could that drama take?

Last season ended on a cliffhanger that placed the survival of one character in doubt, and one of the show’s most prominent recurring characters may have been murdered.

At the same time, there were also unanswered questions about two other characters’ futures, so it’s going to be a chaotic season for sure.

Check out our predictions below and then leave your own ideas in the comments. Then don’t miss the Chicago Med season 5 premiere on Sept. 25 at 8 p.m. on NBC.

1) Connor will reach a breaking point

The biggest question for Chicago Med fans is how the show plans to write out Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell), after surprising viewers with the news that producers had decided not to bring Connor back this season.

He didn’t get a sendoff in last season’s finale, so Donnell will make a one-off appearance in the new season’s premiere to explain how his character is leaving the hospital. It’s likely that the exit story has to do with the death of his father, Cornelius Rhodes (D.W. Moffett), which was looking very suspicious—and almost certainly the work of Connor’s psychotic ex-girlfriend and colleague Dr. Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling).

Connor, and the fans, need to get answers about what happened to Cornelius. And once he gets them, we predict that he’ll have had enough and decide to leave Chicago again. After all, all of last season was him dealing with increasingly crazy things he was sure Ava was doing; Connor rarely had an episode where he wasn’t caught up in something. The guy deserves a break, and he’s not going to get it here.

2) April is not pregnant

April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) left off thinking she might be pregnant again, this time by Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), but we don’t think she will be. It’ll be a false alarm, albeit one that will prompt the reunited couple to start thinking about their long-term future.

Chicago Med just doesn’t have room for a baby. That was evident last season when Choi’s sister Emily (recurring guest star Arden Cho) and her son took up so much of April and Ethan’s lives, and a lot of screen time. The show dragged dealing with that storyline. Add that to the fact that April has already dealt with a pregnancy and a miscarriage a few seasons ago, and there’s just so much that would be awkward and clunky about having her expecting again.

Plus, if the show really wants to tell a family story, this would be a good time to remind viewers that Owen Manning still exists; the poor kid is about to be traumatized by whatever happens to his mom.

3) The new doctor will make an immediate splash

The Chicago Med premiere will introduce a new doctor: Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains), who’s the new trauma surgeon. He seems poised to fill Connor’s void, both in being a trauma doctor and in the way he’s described, as another character who does things differently—although in Marcel’s case it’s because he’s too busy partying.

Expect that Marcel will get a lot of screen time in the premiere, and that most of it is going to make him look good. He’ll solve the case, or impress somebody, or have some kind of notable confrontation. That’s because the writers have to introduce him, and they want him to be liked by the fans, which means having him make a great first impression. They have to make their case for why viewers should care about him.

Hopefully introducing Marcel won’t take away from Connor’s exit or the other cliffhangers that have to be resolved. But fans will get to know him pretty quickly.
