Dr. Marcel, Dr. Choi, and Noah & April Sexton

In the midst of all the chaos, Chicago Med managed to focus in on two key operations: the hip fracture patient of Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and Nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta); as well as the heart bypass procedure done by Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) and Noah Sexton (Roland Buck III).

The two procedures were interspersed throughout the episode, but up first were Ethan and April. Ethan pulled med student Steve (Nick Ivey) to assist him, and the two had to work fast when the power dropped in the OR. Despite April’s initial concerns for how hard Steve was working, he successfully saved their patient by alerting Ethan to an internal change.

Towards the end of the episode, viewers saw a sweet moment exchanged between Chexton, as Ethan told April that she would make a great mom. He knew they had said “someday,” but after what they had been through during the day, he also knew that she would always look out for everyone. So, is there a baby in their future? While it’s not set in stone, the couple certainly seem to be moving further towards a “yes.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Marcel and Noah Sexton were having troubles of their own when their surgery was halted due to the power outage. While Noah was originally an observer, Dr. Marcel had him scrub in as he needed an extra set of hands. Noah was the one who had to clamp the aorta, which saved their patient from fully arresting. Another surgery that went smoothly: score one more for Chicago Med!

Despite the darkness that fell over the hospital, the doctors, nurses, and med students banded together and saved a lot of lives. Their determination and spirit were the figurative lights of the show, which made Chicago Med‘s second episode of the season a beautiful one to watch.
