What should fans look for in this week’s episode of Chicago Med? Get ready for In the Valley of the Shadows with our Chicago Med season 5, episode 3 preview.

Tonight’s episode of Chicago Med will put everyone’s favorite doctors and nurses to the test with difficult patients and strained interpersonal relationships.

“In the Valley of the Shadows” will spotlight Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) as she tackles a patient whose parents prefer holistic medicine. On top of that, her head injury from the season premiere will come back to haunt her, making it especially difficult to do her doctoral duties.

Her abilities will be questioned by her colleagues too, as the promo showed Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) telling her to “stay away from the patient.” Earlier in that same promotional trailer, viewers saw Natalie worry that she mixed up some medicines — could that be why Dr. Halstead bans her from tending to the patient?

Meanwhile, Nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and Dr. Crockett Marcel (Dominic Rains) come to blows over how to treat their patient. Given the exuberant nature of Dr. Marcel, compared to the compassionate, thoughtful ways of April, there’s almost certainly going to be conflict as to the best treatment protocol. Will it affect their working relationship, or even worse, compromise their patient?

The doctors aren’t the only ones who will face some strife within the hospital. Apparently rumors are running wild about Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett). Whether it’s in regards to her recent cancer diagnosis remains unclear; but if it is about that, then Maggie’s desire for it to remain secret will be blown out of the water.

The recently released promotional photos also show Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt), Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), as well as Natalie’s “fiancé” Phillip Davis (Ian Harding).

Phillip appears to be in an intense discussion with Will: is it over Natalie? Dr. Charles appears in quite a few photos, both alone and alongside his wife Caroline (Paula Newsome), so it looks like she will make an appearance in tonight’s episode too.

As for Ethan, he’s set to work with Dr. Charles in treating a dying man with a controversial view on his treatment. Sharon is seen talking with Maggie, and since she’s the only one who currently knows about Maggie’s diagnosis, it’s a safe bet that’s what the two are discussing.
