Former Chicago PD star Sophia Bush has agreed to a recurring role in Love, Simon, the Disney Plus series based on the movie of the same name.

Sophia Bush finally has her next major TV role. Deadline reported Wednesday that the former Chicago PD star will recur in the upcoming Disney Plus series Love, Simon, which is based on the film of the same name.

The TV version, produced by This is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, is set in the world of the 2018 movie. Aptaker and Berger also wrote the hit film, and Nick Robinson, who portrayed the titular character, will be narrating the series.

Love, Simon will follow Victor (played by Michael Cimino) as he navigates life at his new high school while dealing with his sexual identity. Victor finds solace in making new friends like Mia (Rachel Naomi Hilson) who help him survive the ups and downs of adolescence.

Sophia Bush has been cast as Veronica, who is the new girlfriend of Mia’s father. Veronica is described as a thoughtful, sophisticated businesswoman, and runs her own nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping women.

The role sounds like it was tailor-made for Sophia, who has been very involved in women’s rights and other causes over the years. She co-founded the “I Am A Voter” movement, and has spoken out about equal pay in the workplace.

She recently designed a custom Care Bear alongside singers Kacey Musgraves and Sia in celebration of International Day of the Girl, and will be one of the speakers at this week’s Power Women Summit, which takes place from Oct. 24-25 in Santa Monica.

Sophia also has a partnership with Always and just finished up a weekend at the Create & Cultivate Small Business Summit with good friend and fellow activist Stacy London. As if that wasn’t enough, she recently launched her podcast Work in Progress, which has featured important and influential women like Katie Couric and Gloria Steinem.

With that lengthy resume devoted to helping and helping to promote women, she’s a perfect fit to portray a female-oriented businesswoman in Love, Simon.

While her new series doesn’t have the same grit as Chicago PD, it will appeal to One Chicago fans because she’s playing another strong female character. Sophia Bush’s co-starring role as Detective Erin Lindsay was a huge part of Chicago PD, and some fans believe the show has never been the same since she quit following the fourth season.

It’s also a good break for her, as she’s been short-changed on TV opportunities since. She shot the pilot Surveillance for CBS with a great cast and intriguing premise, but the network ultimately let it go. While she’s guest-starred on Jane the Virgin and Alex, Inc. her role in Love, Simon will be her first recurring or regular part since she hung up Lindsay’s badge.

The series does not have an official premiere date yet, but it’s expected next year and will be exclusive to the Disney Plus streaming service, meaning One Chicago enthusiasts will have to subscribe to see it.
