The 2020 Golden Globe nominations are in, and NBC’s One Chicago franchise didn’t get Golden Globes attention for Chicago Fire, Chicago PD or Chicago Med.

Another year, another Golden Globe nominations shutout for One Chicago.

Nominations for the 2020 Golden Globes were announced Monday and NBC‘s most-watched franchise was not nominated in any category.

This probably won’t come as a huge surprise to fans, since Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD have traditionally failed to be recognized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is behind the Golden Globes.

But it’s a disappointment nonetheless as they’d love to see their shows be nominated for awards, and of course possibly win one someday.

What’s the hold-up? In general, it’s very hard for procedurals to get awards show recognition of any kind. There are so many shows that get the bulk of acclaim from critics, leaving the less darling shows out in the cold—including the One Chicago trilogy.

Separately, broadcast TV shows have had their struggles getting awards against series that air on premium cable and streaming. The Chicago shows airing on NBC fall into the broadcast category.

That means it’s an uphill battle. But the latest Golden Globe nominations are recognizing the best in TV and film from 2019, and the One Chicago shows also had their ups and downs this year.

The nominations would cover the second half of last season, and the first part of this season. And that’s been a period of change for the franchise in a lot of ways.

Chicago Med, for example, truly changed in terms of tone and storylines during the fourth season. It amped up the show’s drama with several very different plots, such as Ava Bekker (Norma Kuhling) being revealed as a sociopath, and ultimately was the last season for three original cast members.

Over on Chicago PD, fans were not happy with the show turning Antonio Dawson into a drug addict before Jon Seda was similarly cut from the lineup. Chicago Fire was the most consistent of the three, but was it going to be considered better than shows like The Crown, Big Little Lies, or Killing Eve?

Fans would certainly think so, but we’re a bit biased. The truth is, there are shows that are popular and there are shows that are critically acclaimed—and it’s really hard to be both. One Chicago got left out of the 2020 Golden Globe nominations, but it’s still one of the most-watched franchises in TV.
