One Chicago’s five best couples on Valentine’s Day 2020
By Kari Highman
3. Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek, Chicago PD
Any list of One Chicago couples wouldn’t be the same without fan-favorite Chicago PD couple Burzek—better known as officers Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger).
Even though the two have not officially been together since Chicago PD season 3, things were finally looking up when the duo went back to Adam’s place together at the end of this season’s One Chicago crossover, and what came as a result of that gave Burzek fans a reason to celebrate—for a little while, anyway. In “No Regrets” Burgess found out that she was pregnant with Ruzek’s baby. She told him about the pregnancy, and he promised that he would be there for her, whatever she needed.
Their renewed relationship had a bit of a rough start in “43rd and Normal” because they kept disagreeing over small things that led to a bigger blowout. Kim told her former partner Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) of her pregnancy, but when Kevin asked Adam why he didn’t tell him, Ruzek replied “I didn’t know I was allowed to.”
Ruzek even attempted to propose to Burgess again, sending One Chicago fans’ hearts soaring. But after a long conversation at the end of the episode, the former fiancés agreed that while they may not belong together right now, they were meant to be a family. And then Chicago PD ruined that, crushing shippers’ dreams in the process.
During “I Was Here,” in what was a career-defining performance for Marina Squerciati, Kim was beaten so badly by a suspect that she miscarried. After all the hardships Burzek had been through in previous seasons, to have them lose the baby took a toll not only on the characters, but on the fandom too.
That doesn’t mean we’ve given up hope for their relationship; in fact, this season has proven how much Burzek means to One Chicago. One thing that makes Kim and Adam’s relationship so special is how tethered they are to each other. No matter how many degrees of separation there are between them, they always find their way back to their safe place—each other.
From giving advice on specific cases, to comforting one another, Kim Burgess and Adam Ruzek prove that some relationships in the One Chicago universe don’t need to be perfectly defined to be amazing.
