Wednesday’s episode focuses on Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins), which will be good news for many One Chicago fans. Atwater is a fan favorite and many viewers have said that he deserves to be used more; this installment is exactly what they’ve been asking for.

It’s also a callback to the Chicago PD season 6 episode “Night in Chicago.” For those who may not remember that episode, you can refresh your memory with our recap here.

The general premise of this episode is one that’s very familiar: Atwater goes undercover, yet again. He’s the character most likely to end up undercover, and he’s done it multiple times this season alone.

So what makes this episode different? It’s who he crosses paths with while he’s undercover. Atwater stumbles into another cop—one of the officers he encountered with during “Night in Chicago.” And it’s not a happy encounter.

So Kevin will have two problems: trying to close the case he’s been sent in to deal with, and trying to deal with his beef with that other officer. Atwater usually is the most level-headed of the Intelligence Unit team, but that doesn’t mean he can’t snap. And that would certainly be an explosive way to end the season, even if it’s ahead of schedule.

Here’s the official description that NBC has released for this week’s episode. It’s focused entirely on Atwater, so the safe assumption is that the other characters will be playing supporting roles in his story, and we won’t see any subplots.

"Atwater goes undercover to take down a gun-trafficking ring, but discovers an officer from his past is undercover in the same organization."
