Chicago Med season 5 character review: Will Halstead
Our prognosis
Will and Hannah will almost certainly still be together when Chicago Med season 6 starts. There’s been no reason to think they’d break up between seasons. The question is how long will they stay together? Manstead fans want to hope that Will and Natalie will reunite, but now the producers are aiming to have Natalie and Crockett Marcel eventually couple up. So that would mean Will is staying where he is for at least a portion of next season.
If his personal life isn’t going to have some upheaval in it (unless Natalie makes another confession or Will breaks up with Hannah the way he did with Nina Shore), then by process of elimination, the area that Chicago Med would have to focus on would be his professional life. We haven’t seen him go anywhere professionally over the last five seasons. He hasn’t tried out a new line of work, or gotten promoted, or gotten any kind of recognition. His biggest accomplishment in the hospital has been getting sued once and almost sued again.
The best thing for Will Halstead would be to open up some kind of professional opportunity for him and see him take a step forward. Let him show that he’s matured and isn’t just the impulsive doctor. After all, Nick Gehlfuss turned 35 this year, so why can’t his character grow up, too?
He could do some mentoring with the medical students; the show teased Will and Elsa Curry (Molly Bernard) for about 45 seconds this season. They could work together more. There’s plenty of different stories out there for Will. It’s just a matter of choosing one and running with it. That would make him so much more well-rounded and allow Nick Gehlfuss to shine.
