Mission Impossible 7 casts Chicago PD’s Esai Morales as villain
Mission Impossible 7 will have Chicago PD actor Esai Morales as its villain.
Fans of Chicago PD just got a big reason to see Mission Impossible 7.
Esai Morales, who recurred as Chief Lugo in Chicago PD season 4 and season 5, has boarded the upcoming Tom Cruise movie according to The Hollywood Reporter. He’ll play the next nemesis for Cruise’s superspy Ethan Hunt.
Other than that, no details about his character have been revealed.
Morales moved into the film’s main villain role after Nicholas Hoult (Beast in four X-Men films and one of the stars of Hulu’s new series The Great) dropped out.

It’s a big shift for the movie to go from Hoult to Morales—not only are they entirely different actors stylistically, but they’re 27 years apart in age—so it’s possible the character Morales is taking over will be partially or entirely revamped as a result of the swap.
But it’s also big news for One Chicago enthusiasts. Esai Morales is the second One Chicago alumni to land a significant role in an upcoming Tom Cruise blockbuster; the first was Chicago Justice star Monica Barbaro, who plays an Air Force pilot in Top Gun 2: Maverick. That movie is now expected to premiere Dec. 23, 2020.
And whenever M:I7 does arrive, it’s undoubtedly going to be one of the biggest films at the box office. The franchise just had its highest-grossing film ever with 2018’s Fallout; people love these movies, which makes it even more fun that there’s someone with a Chicago PD connection in the cast.
Morales made his last PD appearance in the fifth season premiere “Reform.” He more recently starred as Slade Wilson, AKA Deathstroke, in the DC Universe series Titans. Among his many other credits are Caprica, Criminal Minds, and How to Get Away with Murder.
