Between The World and Me adds Wendell Pierce to its cast.

Wendell Pierce, who was a Chicago PD fan favorite as Alderman Ray Price, has joined the ensemble for HBO‘s upcoming special Between The World and Me.

The project is a filmed version of the stage play of the same name, which in turn is based on Ta-Nahisi Coates’ award-winning book about America’s racial history.

According to HBO, the special will contain elements of the play, readings from Coates’ original text, and “documentary footage from the actors’ home life, archival footage, and animation.”

It’s expected to premiere later this fall, though the network didn’t give a specific premiere date or any details about Pierce’s involvement in the project.

He joins a star-studded cast including Courtney B. Vance (Law & Order: Criminal Intent), Angela Bassett (9-1-1), Joe Morton (Scandal), Susan Kelechi Watson (This Is Us) and Oprah Winfrey.

Between The World and Me is a project that Pierce should be stellar in. He’s an incredible actor in general but he’s no stranger to portraying race-related issues with poise and great screen presence, including his work in the One Chicago universe, where Ray Price started out as an adversary for the Intelligence Unit and then became an unlikely ally.

He recently returned to Chicago PD in the season 7 finale when Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) visited Price in prison for advice about whether or not he should report the racial profiling by a late fellow officer. The scene between Atwater and Price was the best in the entire finale.

While it’s unclear if we’ll see Price again when Chicago PD returns, since Atwater’s storyline is still going to be front and center at the start of season 8, there’s no shortage of places to watch more of Wendell Pierce.

In addition to his casting in the HBO special he currently stars in Amazon Prime Video’s hit series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan as the title character’s former boss and primary ally, James Greer. He also starred in HBO’s critically acclaimed series The Wire and recurred as Robert Zane on USA’s Suits.
