A new character is joining Chicago Med tonight, but could at least one other recurring character be on their way out the door?

“Fathers and Mothers, Daughters and Sons” brings the always enjoyable Steven Weber (Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Wings, and most recently Indebted) to the medical drama as Dr. Dean Archer, a Navy colleague of Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee).

Archer is brought on by Choi to help him run the Emergency Department, since the last time we saw Ethan, he was in a hospital bed having exhausted himself between work and his own surgical procedure.

Weber is watchable in every role and should add something fun to the Med ensemble; you can read what he has to say about working on the show in our interview.

The bigger question about this episode is if Chicago Med is about to go back to one of its recurring plot devices: ending a subplot that’s played out by shipping a character off to someplace else.

One subplot involves Anna Charles, whose mother wants to take her to another state. The other is about Maggie Lockwood’s (Marlyne Barrett) foster son after Maggie discovered that he does have biological family after all. Both the Anna and Auggie stories have been going on for a few episodes now, and have taken up a lot of screen time.

It’d be easy for the writers to wrap these up by sending Anna to Arizona and/or Auggie off with his newly discovered brother. That’s been done before (see: Robin Charles and Jeff Clarke both leaving Chicago when their respective storylines ended, or Dr. Sarah Reese transferring out of state after the debacle with her serial killer of a dad).

Kids have never been one of this show’s strong points, and the series normally doesn’t hold onto recurring characters long-term; once their featured storyline is over, they tend to fade off. So will this week be the last we see of Auggie or Anna, or both? And if so, are we in for future episodes with their respective parents angsting over their departure?

We’ll have to watch and see if Chicago Med opts for another sad family story or decides to give someone a happy ending.
