Chicago Fire: Here’s why you didn’t see SPOILER in Chicago Fire season 9
By Cody Schultz
Like many shows, Chicago Fire had to change up more than a few plans last season due to the pandemic including how it approached filming certain scenes and having to scrap staples such as its annual crossover with fellow One Chicago dramas, Chicago Med and Chicago PD.
It also forced writers to shake up some of their storyline plans, leading to delayed returns and introductions for certain characters. We’ve already discussed how the pandemic resulted in the delayed return of a beloved character in season 9, but it turns out it also delayed the introduction of a new addition to the 51 family as well.
As Derek Haas revealed to TVLine, due to COVID, they logistically couldn’t have a baby on set for safety reasons — with even the baby in the gas station explosion never actually being seen, only mentioned. Because of this, the writers made the decision to delay the birth of Cruz’s (Joe Minoso) child before the season came to a close.
Will Joe Cruz become a dad in Chicago Fire season 10?
Although the pandemic delayed the birth of Cruz’s child, the hope seems to be for that storyline to play out in season 10 instead which will give fans the chance to see Cruz become a dad.
While it’s unclear when exactly the birth of Chloe and Cruz’s baby will occur, we’re anticipating it will happen sometime early in the season. This would then allow the writers the chance to explore the ups and downs of being a first-time parent as part of Cruz’s season 10 storyline.

As we’ve discussed, while Cruz’s fate remains unclear all signs seem to be pointing towards him surviving what the recent casting call for extras to appear in a baby shower scene and Minoso filming a video in-character from the set to promote a season 10 contest.
