Dr. Stevie Hammer had made quite the impression. The Chicago Med newcomer has made it known that she takes her profession very seriously, and her by-the-book approach has already clashed with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).

That being said, there’s more to Dr. Hammer than meets the eye. There have been hints at her backstory and past relationship with Halstead, as well as personal strife that she’s had to endure on her way to becoming a physician. Needless to say, there’s plenty that fans will get to unravel about Hammer as season 7 progresses.

Here’s a rundown on the character, her mysterious background, and the talented actress who plays her.

Who is Dr. Hammer on Chicago Med?

Dr. Stevie Hammer is played by Kristen Hager. The actress has been a familiar face in film and TV since making her debut in the 2005 miniseries Beach Girls. She’s gone on to star in blockbusters like Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) and Wanted (2008), as well as dramas like I’m Not There (2007).

Hager, who was born in Ontario, Canada, has probably been most successful on television. She’s had juicy guest roles on shows like CSI: Miami, Masters of Sex, and Gotham, and starred as Nora Sergeant in the acclaimed horror-comedy series Being Human (2011-2014). More recently, she appeared in the thriller series Condor.

Hager is married to actor Matt Jones, best known for playing Badger Mayhew on Breaking Bad.

Hammer and Halstead have a past together

Hager has imbued Hammer with lots of humanity, which balances out the character’s more rigid tendencies. Chicago Med showrunner Andrew Schneider revealed that Hammer has had to go through a lot in life, including a difficult childhood. The childhood aspect has already popped up in the episode “To Lean In or To Let Go“, where Hammer talks to an overbearing mother about how to connect with her son.

The strongest relationship Hammer has thus far is with Halstead, and given the two characters went to medical school together, fans can expect to see more of them in action. “There’s an interesting relationship with Will”, Schneider told TV Guide. “There’s a certain kind of friendly rivalry and competition between them.”

It’s unclear whether Hammer and Halstead will develop a romance or a friendship, but it will be interesting to see their dynamic change regardless.
